Paetongtarn Shinawatra Resigns as Leader of Pheu Thai Party
In her announcement, Paetongtarn revealed that while stepping down from her leadership role, she would remain a member of the party.
“Pheu Thai, as one of the country’s main political forces, must evolve to strengthen its capacity to serve the people and guide the nation through change,” she stated in her remarks.
She further explained that her resignation would provide the party with the necessary freedom to implement reforms and work towards creating "a more complete and modern Pheu Thai."
Earlier in August, the Constitutional Court dismissed Paetongtarn following an ethics violation.
The court ruled that she had compromised national interests during a phone conversation with former Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, where she allegedly made assurances regarding a border dispute and criticized a Thai military general.
This dismissal adds to the ongoing political instability in Thailand, a country that has faced recurring conflicts between elected officials and the judiciary ever since the 2006 ousting of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
